How to Securely Encrypt Flash Drive

A flash drive is a great way to store and transport data and documents so that you can have access to them at any time. However, flash drives are getting minuter making them easy to forget once plugged in and have a higher tendency to accidentally fall out of your pocket or bag. This also means that someone else can take your flash drive without you noticing it until it is too late. Since human error and theft are common, it is important to encrypt flash drive to ensure that no one else can benefit from important data. The best defence in this case is to encrypt your flash drive.

1Encrypt Flash Drive Using BitLocker

If you are already using a computers that are running on Windows Vista or 7 Ultimate, Windows Vista or 7 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Enterprise, you will probably already have BitLocker Microsoft's easy-to-use encryption program for Windows. Not only can you protect your flash drive with it, it is able to encrypt your computer's drive and protect your system from unauthorised changes.

Most home or personal used computers run on the standard version of Windows BitLocker is not included. However, if you upgraded to Windows 8 during its dual-interface OS rollout, you would already have Windows 8 or 8.1 Pro.

Here is how you can encrypt USB flash drive with BitLocker if you already have it:

  1. Log in a computer you have administrative right and plug in your flash drive in one of the USB ports.
  2. Double-click on the Computer icon on the desktop.

2Other Ways to Encrypt Flash Drives

If you are not keen to upgrade your operating system because you are too nervous to do it yourself or it is too expensive, there are other ways you can encrypt flash drive. Here are three ways how:

Option 1: Purchase a secure flash drive

This is the easiest option if you are particularly not savvy with technology. On your first use, you will need to register a password for an encrypted flash drive. The encryption software is stored in the flash drive so that you can have accessibility to encrypt flash drive on different computers and across operating system platforms. Different secure flash drives have different levels of security according to FIPS 140-2 (Federal Information Processing Standard, Publication 140-2), so get one that is most suited for you.

Level Description
Level 1 Encrypt the flash drive using the approved encryption algorithm e.g. AES256.
Level 2 The approved encryption algorithm is complemented with a feature that detects tampering.
Level 3 Other than the flash drive, the encrypting mechanism and algorithm is also protected.
Level 4 The flash drive is enhanced with the ability to completely destroy any data stored in the flash drive and its decrypting mechanism.

Option 2: Install an encryption software in your flash drive

Transform your normal flash drive to a secure one by installing a specialised encryption software into it. You will then will be able to use your normal flash drive as you would with a secure flash drive. This way, if you have a well-functioning flash drive, you will not need to get a new one just because you need to upgrade your security.

Option 3: Use a free desktop encryption software

Unlike BitLocker, there are plenty of open-source encryption software available for you to use. This is particularly useful if you want to only be able to access an encrypted flash drive on a specific computer. This may be less useful, but it would be more secure because you would need two devices to access data in the flash drive.
