How to Recover Windows XP from Freezing

Windows XP issues, I need my data intact!

I have to use the windows xp home edition recovery cd as my system is totally messed up. I also need to re-install the drivers and utilities from cd. If I do this will I lose any important files, documents, emails etc.? I use Microsoft Office 2003. I cant even start it in safe mode, the screen comes up but then it freezes and I can't access anything. Thanks for you help in advance.
